Your Funeral Home’s Most Powerful Marketing Tool? The Family Experience.
June 23, 2026AEO for funeral homes, or answer engine optimization, means writing your website so tools like ChatGPT or Google’s AI Overviews can pull a clear, accurate answer straight from your pages on your funeral home’s website. It’s not a replacement for SEO, it works alongside it and often builds on the same groundwork. The good news is the fundamentals stay the same: answer the questions your families are asking, be specific to your firm and community, and keep your pages up to date.
You maintain a busy schedule, but AEO is worth fitting between arrangement calls and answering emails. About 68 % of U.S. Google searches ended without a click in early 2026, up from roughly 60% in 2024, per SparkToro and Similarweb data. Additionally nearly 30% of families now complete their funeral arrangements entirely online, per the NFDA’s 2025 Consumer Awareness and Preferences Study. Together, those numbers point to the same trend: more families are asking an AI tool a question first, the way they might ask a friend, before they ever pick up the phone. The questions haven’t changed, where people ask them has.
SEO Still Matters. AEO Builds on It
If you’ve already put work into your website’s SEO, keep going, that means you’ve laid the right groundwork. Good page titles, fast load times, and local keywords still help people and AI tools find you in the first place. A traditional search result gives you a spot among ten links and a chance at a click. An AI answer only has room for a few, so it tends to favor whatever states things most plainly and specifically. Additionally anything genuinely new is highly favorable to AEO and builds off the same best practice to provide information gain in SEO, per Ahrefs’. Think of AEO as tightening the pages you already have, not starting over.
Start by Just Answering the Question
- Say the answer up front. If a page is about cremation costs, the first sentence or two should give a real answer, not a warm welcome paragraph first. Save the storytelling for after.
- Mimic the questions families actually ask. “How much does cremation cost in [your city]” will get picked up more often than “Our Cremation Services,” because it matches how people actually search, not how we’re used to describing our services.
- Add a short FAQ near the bottom of key pages. A few plainly worded questions and answers give both search engines and AI tools something easy to quote correctly.
Pick a Few Topics and Show Your Expertise
You don’t have to cover every possible topic to be found. A 2026 Semrush study of how brands show up by name in ChatGPT, across more than a thousand categories, found that appearing once in twenty different topics barely built any recognition, while appearing consistently across three or more related questions within one topic did. For your firm, that might mean becoming the clear, thorough source on cremation options, veteran benefits, preplanning, or whatever your team already fields the most questions about. This aspect of AEO also provides an opportunity to show families what makes your firm different.
Be Specific, and Keep It Current
- Use your own numbers, not the industry average. Saying “our median cremation package in [county] runs $X” tells a family something tangible. Saying “cremation is often more affordable” tells them nothing they haven’t already read on ten other sites.
- Name the specifics only you would know. Local cemeteries, hospice partners you work with, or how your community typically handles a service. That’s the kind of detail families actually want to know.
- Revisit your busiest pages every few months. Updating pricing, hours, or any information that’s gone stale keeps a good page working for you instead of eventually falling behind.
Set Up an llms.txt File on Your Website
Think of it as a sitemap for AI, here are a few reasons it matters:
- It cuts the clutter. AI gets pointed to clean, plain-text versions of your core pages instead of wading through ads, menus, and code.
- It gives AI a source of truth. A short, curated summary of your firm, services, and policies means you help control the story AI pulls from.
- It highlights what matters. Rather than every URL on your site, it flags the pages with real substance, like pricing and service details.
- It makes it easier to cite. When a family asks ChatGPT or Perplexity a direct question, a lightweight plain-text path helps AI read, fetch, and cite your pages accurately.
None of this requires a marketing degree or a complete website overhaul. Start small: pick the one or two topics your firm already knows best, make sure the page answers the question plainly, and keep it accurate and current.
